Many people from Reykjavik, the country's capital, have weekend huts by a nearby lake. Close to the village, Kirkjugólf (or Churchfloor) is a natural pavement of basalt. These are a group of basalt columns in the earth, but only their tops can be seen and, as the name suggests, together they look like a paved church floor. At 1700 km² in area, the nearby Skaftafell National Park is Iceland's second largest national park and has many hiking trails. The park is a fantastic example of Iceland?s countryside and landscape; full of valleys and mountains, and it is also home to the glacier Skaftafellsjökull (a spur of the Vatnajökull ice cap). The park is a great place to see some fascinating examples of Icelandic wildlife, including many species of birds and arctic foxes. The Skaftafell National Park also includes many examples of the lively geological features for which Iceland is famous. The waterfall Svartifoss (Black Falls) flows over a step of about 12 metres. Its name comes from the black basalt columns behind the falls. The striking Laki craters are part of a volcanic fissure. The craters themselves are a 25-km-long row of spectacular formations of red and black volcanic rock, up to 100 metres high. The craters erupted in 1783 and lay waste a vast area of south Iceland. Also nearby, Eldgjá is a volcanic canyon and is part of the same volcanic system as the Laki craters and Katla, in the south of the country. At its greatest the canyon is 270m deep and 600m wide.
