The town is still a busy fishing port all year round and the flourishing fish industry is the area?s main source of employment. Gerpir is the easternmost point of Iceland and is geologically fascinating. The East Iceland Maritime Museum is at Eskifjörður and there is war museum at Reyðarfjörður, which focuses on the Second World War, when Iceland was occupied by British and then American troops. To the east of Neskaupstadur, facing the ocean, is the Neskaupstadur Nature Reserve, an area of outstanding natural beauty with many hiking paths and spectacular scenery. Eyðibyggðir is a series of abandoned settlements between Eskifjörður and Neskaupstadur, and is fantastic for hiking, with many walking trails through the area?s magnificent landscape.
